Lately...

Hello to all and happy fall!

I apologize for being MIA for the last month. A LOT has been going on. I'm currently training for an MMA fight in early December (feels weird to actually type it) and most of my days consist of working, training, and following an extremely regimented diet. I've sincerely missed vintage shopping, thrifting, baking, and most of all eating whatever I want! Anywho, I thought I'd share a bit of life lately up here in the north. I hope to get back into blogging and sharing my life with ya'll!

Have great weekend everyone! Its great to be back!

XOXO

Photo Shoot

A few weeks ago, I collaborated with a gal pal, Kristina Warta of KBK Photography to do some vintage style photographs. I have never been real keen on being photographed and I've always been a little shy and self conscious of my body. Even with all of that, it was a great experience and I'd definitely be up for it again. Kristina was wonderful. She invited me into her home and worked patiently with me (any my many fits of nervous laughter) to help me expand my comfort zone. I came away from the experience feeling glamorous and a little braver than before. Sadly, Kristina recently moved out of my area and is currently setting up shop in Gibbon, Nebraska. I wish her the best of luck. If you're in the area, look her up, she's fabulous! Here are a few of my favorite photos from the shoot.

What are some of your experiences with photo shoots or just stepping out of your comfort zone in some way?

Unexpected Eras

I recently went to the salon to get my hair trimmed up into my usual style (a little bit shorter than shoulder length with short, Audrey Hepburn style bangs). The stylist cut my hair up to my jawbone instead; not quite what I was expecting. It was the first time I actually cried over a haircut (Seriously, I was blubbering...it was pretty embarrassing). After I got over the initial shock, I decided that this is an excellent (albeit unexpected) opportunity to explore an era I had previously ignored.

I've always been more of a 1940s and 1950s kind of gal. I felt that the silhouette of the nipped waists and the hourglass shape of those eras better suited my somewhat muscular and broad shouldered hourglass figure. Plus, I just love the victory rolls, barbie curls, and headscarves of the 40s and 50s. Right now my hair is too short for all of those (except the headscarves), and reminds me a lot of the flapper haircuts of the 1920s.  So, lately I have been scouring the internet for pictures from the 20s that inspire the inner "flapper" girl in me. Here are a few of them...

In my "research", I've actually come to adore the era. I can't get enough of the hats and headdresses! Hopefully soon I'll be brave enough to post some pictures of myself attempting to translate this lovely era into my own wardrobe.

Flea For All!

This weekend I had the pleasure of stumbling upon a small vintage flea market hosted by a local brick and mortar shop, Vintage City. It was my very first time stopping into the store and I cannot say how delighted I was! Not only was the cozy little shop beautifully curated, but they also had refreshments (lemonade and what looked like brownies or fudge). And the stuff! Oh my goodness the stuff! The owners, Marla Rae and Bill were the nicest of folk. They were kind enough to let me poke around, take as many pictures as I wanted, and they even humored my request for a picture of them. I made a very long mental list of things I want from the shop, and came home with butterscotch Bakelite earrings (eek!), a fantastic orange bracelet, an old photograph, a hilarious novelty dishcloth, and some fiesta-ware for my mother (I'll be sharing pictures of my haul later on I'm sure). Such a wonderful balm to a vintage soul! I'll definitely be visiting again!

All in all, it was a wonderful weekend! How about ya'll? How was your weekend? Stumble upon anything fantastic?

A Grand New Adventure

Hello all! I've decided to fill my year (or what's left of it, being August) with some new ventures. This blog is one of them, and hopefully it'll be a place where I can share the rest of them with you lovelies! Also, please be patient with me as I tweak my blog and layout. I'm brand new to blogger and the concept of html, so this is a learning process.

Anywho, lets get this train rolling. My name is Katie and while I have many interests and passions, one of my favorites is old things or "vintage" things. Yes, I like that word much better. Let's go with "vintage".

I am in no way an expert on vintage. What I know, I've learned from watching old movies, reading old magazines, and lots and lots of sitting in front of my mirror just messing around with different types of bright red lipstick. I don't dress in vintage every single day...and that's OK with me. Vintage clothing is a little hard to come by in my neck of the woods (I live in Minot, North Dakota). Even though this area has a rich history (which I will be sharing with you along and along), living was hard up here and most often, women wore clothes until they completely wore out. I try to tie the vintage pieces I DO have into a style that hails back to my favorite eras in history. Basically, I do my best with what I can find. When I do come across a vintage piece in one of the local thrift stores, its absolutely magical. I've scared many a passer by with my delighted squealing!

I hope to share some of those finds with you in this blog along with all of my other shenanigans and adventures. So stay tuned :)
